Rules for using public Internet computers

The public Internet computers are in the library to allow patrons access to online information resources. If you need help with things such as:

  • Getting quick information (e.g. train schedule, addresses, government forms, etc.)
  • Finding research materials (e.g. health, genealogy, etc.)
  • Homework help for students
  • Getting your resume from your e-mail
  • Printing research information
  • Any other information needs go to the Information services desk on the 2nd floor. The Information Services staff have the time and the training to help you with any of your information needs.

The Readers’ Advisory staff is here to help you with Adult Fiction information. For any non-fiction information, they will refer you to the staff at the Information Services desk.

The public Internet computers are also available for recreational and other non-informational uses. We do not have staff available to help you use the computers for these purposes.

  • The sign-up public Internet computers on the 1st floor are self-serve.
  • Only one reservation per person per day. If you sign up for a 15-minute computer, that is all the time you can have today. You can’t get a one-hour computer later.
  • You are responsible for making your own reservation. Staff will not do it for you.
  • You are responsible for getting to your assigned computer at the time on your slip. If you lose your reservation because you didn’t get there on time, you can’t sign on again today.
  • Belleville residents must use their Belleville Public Library card to sign up for a computer. If you live in Belleville and you don’t have a card, you must get one at the Circulation desk. ID showing address is required.
  • Non-residents who use the Internet frequently here, and who would have to pay the non-resident fee to get a BPL card, may get an Internet Only card at the Circulation desk. ID showing address is required.
  • Guest passes, available at the Readers’ Advisory desk, are only for visitors to Belleville. ID showing home address is required.
  • Cards may only be used by the person in whose name they are issued. If you are found to be using someone else’s card, your Internet session will be terminated immediately, and the card you were using will be BLOCKED so that the owner of the card will have to provide ID before he/she is allowed to use it again.
  • Your Internet session will be terminated, and your name and card number will be recorded, if you:
    • Access inappropriate websites (remember that you can do things at home which are not appropriate in a public place where there are children present)
    • Have more than 1 person at the workstation and you are making enough noise to disturb other patrons

  • Public Internet access is FREE. We do not have enough staff available to offer the hands-on help for recreational use of the Internet that you would get in a place where you were paying for access. The Readers’ Advisory staff is here to help patrons with Adult Fiction. They are not here to help with the Internet computers.

o Readers’ Advisory desk staff will not do the following:

o Help you access your personal e-mail.

o Help you open attachments or download pictures from your e-mail. If you can’t do it, it’s because the high level of security on our public computers will not allow this.

o Help you with printing. You are responsible for any prints you make. Check "Print Preview” to ensure that you are printing only what you want to pay for. If you need help with printing materials for information, please ask the Information Services staff on the 2nd floor.
