JOB TITLE: Summer Program and Collection Assistant

POSTING DATE: 12 May 2012

Position Description:

Reporting to the Coordinator, Children's, Youth and Readers' Services, the successful summer program and collection assistant will assist in the promotion and facilitation of summer program and improve the children's nonfiction collection. The assistant will work with the department staff to promote, plan and facilitate a summer reading club and other programs for children and youth. The assistant will also evaluate each subject area of the children's nonfiction collection to make it more accessible and relevant for Kindergarten to Grade 6 students in the community. The assistant will develop activities to promote the library's electronic databases for children to promote the resources. The assistant will use the library online catalogue in order to provide reference and roving services to patrons.

Qualifications:

· A full-time university or college student during the previous academic year and be intending to return to full- time studies in the next academic year.
· Experience in customer service or in working with children
· Experience with computers including Microsoft office programs
· Excellent communication and writing skills
· Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work harmoniously with staff and the public
· Excellent research skills on finding information using print and electronic resources
Responsibilities:
· Assist in the planning, promotion, preparation and presentation of the summer reading club and weekly children's programs at the library
· Review the children's nonfiction collection to evaluate all subject areas and make recommendations for improving any weak subject areas.
· Promote the summer reading club program and assist with registration
· Responsible for collating and analyzing summer reading club program statistics using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
· Performs other duties as assigned
Weekend and evening work may be required
This is a summer student position effective 11 June 2012 for a period of 9 weeks, working 35 hours per week at a rate of $12 per hour. –Length of term subject to change depending on grant funding.—
